There is a difference between being literate and being educated. The wholesome growth of an individual happens only when he or she is educated. The enthusiasm and learning of Gautam spell out the difference between literate and educated.

Akshaya Patra mid day meal programme beneficiaryGautam, a 9th standard student of Government Higher Primary School, Peenya, appears to be very enthusiastic about an upcoming event. He is one of the dancers of the school dance troupe. Not only is he a dancer, but a budding singer too. In fact, to this he says, “Why play music on the record when I can sing?” with a twinkle in his eye. Interestingly, he aspires to be a singer or an actor, with Sandalwood hero, Darshan being his inspiration. A teaser of this young talent was experienced when he put forward the condition that his picture be clicked first, and only then will he answer any question!

It’s a fact that we keep thinking about food till we are hungry. Once fed, it paves for our inner talents to surface. Gautam gets a stomach full serving of freshly cooked, healthy, nutritious and hot meal during his school lunch. This food has helped him to study or to say become a literate; in combination with broadening his talents and horizons or to say become an educated individual. The reading, writing and co-curricular skills that he is learning in school instils in him the hope or aspiration of becoming a noted person in the future.  This is where we say Gautam is getting educated.  Akshaya Patra is continuously working towards a hunger free and educated society.

Akshaya Patra serves mid-day meal to this school and over 9000 schools across 9 Indian states. Currently, feeding 1.3 million children, and aiming to reach out to 5 million children by 2020, it is steadily progressing towards achieving its vision of “No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger”. When Akshaya Patra serves a meal to a child, it serves not only to feed the hungry stomach, but also to nourish the budding minds.
